1. Keep Windows Secure
Windows are one of the easiest ways for burglars to gain entry to your home because they are often left unlocked. Check the locks on all of your windows and consider installing devices that limit how wide a window can be opened.
2. Use Motion-Activated Lights
If a burglar creeps up to your house in the middle of the night only to be doused in a bright light, it will likely send him running. Motion-activated lights aren’t a new technology by any means, but they are certainly something every single home should have installed in both their front and back yard.
Not only is this a great way to deter thieves, but it is also convenient to have when you send the dogs outside to take a potty break or need to check the mail after dark.
3. Stop Hiding A Key Under The Mat
…Or under the rock, or under the flower pot, or anywhere else on your porch. Most people have hidden a key on their porch at some point, and many leave it there 24/7/365. If someone wants to enter your home in the middle of the night, they know to check the ‘hot spots’ where keys might be hidden.
Instead of relying on a key, install a smart lock on your door that can be opened with an access code, key, or with your smartphone. That way, if you forget your key, you have two other entry options.
4. Invest In Smart Home Features
They always say to leave a light on when you go on vacation, but these days there are much better options. Home automation technology is a great way to have complete control over certain features in your home while you’re away. You can turn the lights on and off on a random schedule, open or close the blinds, and even turn on the TV.
While this might seem complicated, ProTECHt can set you up with a home automation system and show you the ropes. You can even access your door and window locks as well as your garage door through your smartphone, just in case you forget to lock something on your way out of the door.
5. Use Decoys (For Now)
Decoys work well to deter thieves… until the thief figures out they’re just decoys. If there has been a lot of crime in your neighborhood recently, setting up stickers that say “This home is protected by an alarm system,” “Beware of Dog,” or even placing fake cameras around the property can provide a temporary fix.
However, fakes are no replacement for the real thing. If a thief breaks into your home anyways, you’ll be thankful that you invested in a real home security system.
6. Get Rid Of Hiding Spots
While a home surrounded by big gates and shrubs might seem more secure, these features actually create a target because a burglar knows they can sneak around your home without being seen. It might be time to trim back your landscape and ensure someone on the street can have a full view of your home.
7. Call On Your Neighbors When You’re Away
Trusted neighbors can be your biggest ally when it comes to deterring break-ins, especially when you’re out of town. Even though smart home automation can make it look like someone is turning the lights on throughout the day, it can’t do everything. If a potential thief sees that you have five newspapers in your driveway, a mailbox stuffed to the brim, and your trash can isn’t on the curb even though it’s trash day, they might realize you’ve been gone for a while.
If you’re heading out of town, ask a neighbor to collect your mail and newspapers for you, and offer to extend the favor the next time they are out of town.
8. Make Home Security a Habit
It’s not enough to simply install a home security system if nobody knows how to use it. Take time to talk with all members of your household, including the kids, about the importance of home security and make sure everybody knows how to use any security features in your home.
